Posted on October 7, 2008 - Filed Under Travel

Barcelona is located on the north eastern Mediterranean coast of the Iberian peninsula in Spain.  It is the countries second largest city with a population of 1.5 million.  Barcelona is the capital of the Catalonia region of Spain. This region is special as it features both the Catalan and Spanish languages.

The city is very diverse and has a rich history of arts and culture. It has a well preserved historical Gothic center La Rambla and has a thriving port.  Barcelona’s center is the old city – Las Ramblas – which has small streets and shops and is a great area to wander around.  It includes the  immense Boqueria market.

Eating in Barcelona is fun and Tapas bars can be found everywhere.,  Because the city is on the coast there are a multitude of seafood dishes including octopus, prawns, squid, clams and anchovies. There are also many ice cream and fruit juice vendors on the street. Accommodation is easy to find including a fine array of five star Barcelona hotels.

The Barceloneta area is famous for it’s beaches.  The beaches are excellent with clean water and soft sand.  There are also many lifeguards everywhere and the beaches are very safe.
