Posted on December 13, 2008 - Filed Under Travel

Madrid is known as the capital of Spain and one of the largest cities in Europe. Famed for its nightlife, its bullfights, and its architecture, Madrid is also home to an astounding collection of art. Visitors will find that staying at many of the five star Madrid hotels will offer easy access to the city’s historical landmarks and its world renowned galleries and museums.

The Golden Triangle of Art consists of three museums on the Paseo del Prado: the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum, the Reina Sofía (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía), and the most famous, the Prado (Museo del Prado). There are other museums and galleries throughout the city, but these three are not to be missed by any true art afficiando.

The Prado is home to one of the best art collections in the world and certainly the finest classical art in Spain. Art lovers can peruse the varied collections of Spanish, Italian, German, and Dutch and Flemish art. The museum is home to masterpieces such as Goya’s Black Paintings and el Greco’s “Adoration of the Shepards” as well as other Spanish masters. Other artists represented include Van Dyck, Botticelli, Rubens, and Tintoretto Caravaggio.

The Reina Sofia has a stunning collection of modern art. This is the home to many of Picasso’s most famous pieces, including the newly returned “Guernica” which had been housed in New York for more than twenty years. Visitors can also view the works of Kandinsky, Dalíand Miró.

The Tyssen Bornemisza Museum of Art was established from one of the largest private collections in the world and was located in the Villahermosa Palace which was renovated for this use. The museum opened in 1992. The permanent collections span over 700 years of art and include more works by Goya and Picasso as well as master works by Van Gogh, Renior, Degas, Monet, Lichtenstien and Mondrian.
