Singapore’s Incredible Cuisine

Posted on December 18, 2008 - Filed Under Dining, Travel

Although it is the smallest nation in Asia, Singapore has a big reputation for its bustling economy, its multicultural population, and its delightful food. One of only four true city-states in the world, Singapore is also home to several of the top 100 finest restaurants in the world and is also famous for its hawker centres and food courts. The diverse influences of China, Malay, and India have found their way into the food of Singapore, creating a unique dining experience.

The most well known Singapore dish is arguably Laksa, esp. the lemak or Katong style. This fragrant soup with a coconut curry broth features noodles with shrimp or cockles. Penang laksa is made with a tamarind-infused broth rather than the coconut, so be careful when ordering to remember which is which.

As an island, Singapore offers an incredible variety of fresh seafood. Some favorites include squid, oysters, lobster, chut chut, cockles, crabs and stingray. Sambal stingray is a dish featuring barbecued stingray served with sambal or chili on a banana leaf. Other seafood dishes to try are deep fried baby squids, black pepper crabs, and drunken prawns.

The diversity of local flavors is evident in dishes ranging from satay to Hainanese chicken rice. Other favorites among locals include mee poh, nasis lemak, bak chor mee, and chili crab. In addition to local food, Singapore offers a window into authentic dishes from China, Japan, India, Italy, France, Thailand, and other world cuisines. Whether looking for Singapore fine dining or wandering through the nearest hawker stalls, the diversity of Singapore food will astound and satisfy the most adventurist of appetitites.
