The Diversity of New York Restaurants

Posted on December 12, 2008 - Filed Under Dining

New York remains one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. As the historic home to waves of immigrants to the United States, the city has developed a unique, multicultural environment that is reflected in the variety of cuisine and dining experiences available today. With over 25,000 New York restaurants in operation, the choices are mind boggling.

The abundance of eateries has a hidden benefit: diners can generally find the exact restaurant to suit both their palate and their pocketbook. Everything from street vendors to five-star establishments has a place in New York. Budget-conscience diners can choose from local mom-and-pop restaurants, cafes, and delis as well as fast food and popular family chain restaurants. Top chefs from all over the world have travelled to New York to open flagship or cutting edge restaurants, assuring fine dining opportunities that are unparalleled.

Known for its bagels, hot dogs, pretzels, cheesecake, and New York-style pizza, the city expresses its immigrant nature in the diversity of its food. Nearly every cuisine in the world can be found somewhere in the city. Many ethnic cuisines are tied to the parts of the city where those immigrants settled. Chinatown and Little Italy are the most famous, but you can also find Indian, Greek, Fench, Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Jewish, Ethiopian, and Middle Eastern eateries, as well as many other.

No visit to New York would be complete without sampling the street food. The city has licensed about 4,000 vendors who sell everything from the famous hot dog and pretzels to kebabs, falafels, and dosas. Morning vendors offer coffee, bagals, and pastries, and even belgian waffles. There are also carts that offer ice cream, roasted peanuts, and italian ices.
