Anyone planning a trip to Kuala Lumpur will recognize that tourism has become a major industry in this Malaysian capital. The small Chinese village has developed into a major destination for shopping, nightlife, food and sight-seeing. The city has also become an important location for business trips and conferences. As a result a number of 5 star Kuala Lumpur hotels have sprung up along with a variety of other hotels and resorts.

Whether in KL for business or pleasure, travelers may want to make time to investigate some of the cultural attractions in the city. Kuala Lumpur is home to several quality museums and art galleries as well as performing arts venues such as the Petronas Philharmonic hall and the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre.

The National Museum is located on the edge of the Lake Gardens (Taman Tasik Perdana). It was established in 1963 as the national respository of Malaysia history and culture. It is comprised of a number of galleries and collections, including the Cultural Gallery, the Natural History Gallery, the Metalwork and Musical Instruments Gallery, the Historical Gallery, and the National Sports Gallery. The museum is also home to a library, a large photographic collection, and a replica of an ancient Malay palace.

The Islamic Arts Museum is recognized by its five decorated domes and expansive exhibition space. It is the largest collection of Islamic art in Southeast Asia. Open since the end of 1998, the museum houses over 7,000 artifacts of Islamic culture. It houses an extensive library featuring books on Islamic art as well as rare Chinese exhibits. It also boasts one of the largest scale models in the world of Mecca’s Masid al-Haram.

The National Art Gallery of Malaysia can be found in Kuala Lumpur. It’s unique architecture is a blending of traditional Malay building styles combined with modern urban architecture. Today it houses over 2500 pieces of art in five galleries and includes paintings, prints, photography, textiles, drawings, sculpture, and antiques. There is a cafe, auditorium, and outdoor exhibition area.
