New York City

Posted on February 1, 2009 - Filed Under Travel

New York has always been a newsworthy city. From the day the Dutch purchased the island from the Native Americans, there have been stories woven about this unique place. The city served as the first capital of the United States from 1785 to 1790. It has been the largest city in the US for over two hundred years and the most popular tourist destination as well.

Home of dozens of historic landmarks and venues, the city also serves as a financial and business capital for the world. With a number of prestigious universities, the city is also known for its research and higher education. Diplomacy is also a factor, with the headquarters of the United Nations housed in the city. New York is home to some of the finest museums in the world, offering insights into art, science, and history.

It would be difficult to find an industry in which New York wasn’t a leader (or the leader): Art, fashion, food, television, film, theater, sports, architecture, music, publishing. Most of the world’s major corporations have offices in New York and countless sports and entertainment stars call New York home (for at least part of the time). The city has the best of everything, from four star restaurants to five star New York hotels to the hottest nightclubs in the world to one of the most recognizable skylines.

Some of the more famous landmarks in New York include Central Park, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, Madison Square Garden, Times Square, and Wall Street.
