Mauritian Food Festival

Posted on March 18, 2009 - Filed Under Dining

Dieu Donne just outside Cape Town in Franschhoek will host a two day Mauritian Food Festival next weekend. The festival will provide an introduction to the unique fusion of Creole, French, Chinese, and India flavors that is found on Mauritius. It will be held March 27-28, 2009, which marks the 1st anniversary of the Dieu Donne restaurant.

Dieu Donne vineyards and restaurant are owned by Robert Maingard. Maingard is a Mauritian with holdings in several parts of the world. The strong French influence on Mauritius has remained in the belief that gastronomy is “an extension of daily cultural reality.”

Mauritian cuisine tends to be lighter and healthier, according to Jo Van Staaden of Dieu Donne. Chefs there “use spices to create culinary magic.” Guests will be able to sample these enticing flavors during a buffet dinner on March 27th. On Saturday, March 28th, there will be an a la carte lunch followed by a buffet dinner.

The Mauritian Naiade resort group is sending two of their top chefs to assist in the festival. A special performance by a Sega dancing group will take place on the restaurant lawn. The Mauritian Embassy assisted with the arrangements for the event.

The event also calls attention to the increasing traffic between Cape Town and Mauritius. The best Cape Town hotels have benefited from the exchange as have other area businesses, such as the Dieu Donne. The organizers of the festival hope that it will be the first of many culinary and cultural exchanges between the two regions.
