Posted on April 1, 2009 - Filed Under Health

Government officials have confirmed that the birth and death rates in Goa, India have remained mostly stable for the past five years. The birth rate has stayed in the 24,000 range since 2004.

This smallest Indian state, which is more famous for its glamorous beaches and four star hotels Goa, has higher rates of literacy and family planning awareness. These factors are credited for the relatively stable birth rate.

The number of births registered in 2008 was 24,021, a slight increase from the 23,893 born in 2007 and slightly less than the 24,801 recorded in 2006. The previous two years were also in the same ballpark, with 24,631 born in 2005 and 24,896 born in 2004.

Death rates also remained stable, hovering around the 12,000 per year mark. There were 11,711 registered deaths in 2008 compared to 12,193 in 2007 and 12,639 recorded in 2006. In 2005 there were 11,373 registered deaths and 10,955 in 2004.

For 2008 the rural talukas show the lesser birth rates. (Goa is comprised of 11 administrative talukas or sub-districts). Sanguem taluka on Goa’s eastern edge registered only 140 births with Pernem, located in the north following with 219.

Talukas on the coast of Goa registered the highest birth rates. Bardez led the pack with 6,844 births followed by 5,686 in Salcetta on the southern coast.
