Posted on April 20, 2009 - Filed Under Arts & Culture, Travel

The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra provides excellent classical music concerts and has a strong interest in the musical development of the youth. It was established in 1914 and is one of two full-time professional orchestras in South Africa. The schedule is primarily structured around seasonal themes, though it is very much a multi-functional company. Being one of the major cultural attractions for tourists, patrons are commonly staying at one of the near by Cape Town five star hotels. The tourists can experience first hand the company’s involvement and support of charities by attending a special evening of symphonic pops. The company is also a traveling orchestra that takes its music to community venues.

Education and youth musicianship are high priorities for the company and it has a few youth programs. The Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra was developed in 2004 bringing in most of its participants from lesser-advantaged communities. The program offers young musicians regular workshops and one-on-one training. They also have the opportunity to perform in regularly scheduled concerts. The Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble offers the same benefits to wind instrument players. Beginning in 2004, the Ensemble has grown in participation and offerings. In 2007 they collaborated with the visiting Dutch group Brass Band Schoonhoven at the V&A Waterfront. That same year they performed as part of the second Cape Town Summer Music Festival.

The symphony regularly brings in guest musicians such as solo violist Maxim Rysanov. Rysanov, who is also a conductor is recognized as one of the best and most versatile viola players in the world. He was born in the Ukraine, and moved to London where he is now based. He performs regularly in the UK and is invited to travel for concerts across the globe. Rysanov has won many awards including the prestigious 2008 Classic FM Gramophone Young Artist of the Year. He has also won in the Tertis and Geneva competitions. Rysanov has also been invited to travel to Switzerland as a guest conductor.
