Posted on May 4, 2009 - Filed Under Arts & Culture

Johannesburg musicians were at the head of the pack for the South African Music Awards last year. This was the fifteenth annual awards ceremony and was held May 2nd, 2009, in the Northwestern province at the Superbowl, next to the many luxury hotels. Johannesburg artists are among the best in the country. Nominated for the best gospel album is Rebecca Malope’s twenty-ninth album. Other South African greats include Zamajobe and Hugh Masekela, well known contemporary jazz musicians. With over twenty categories and more than fifty nominated artists, the diversity of the music scene is obvious, most of those musicians having been born and raised in Johannesburg.

This was a record year for entries, close to 750. The categorical range and the variety of the bands and the musicians stands as a testament to the growing scene of various genres of the music of Africa. This year as well, brings many new talents and artists with that same passion and conviction. The first time nominees were extremely excited and celebrated by signing autographs, basking in the glory and the recognition. This is important for the country to recognize the new comers at it inspires and motivates other locals trying to reach the world class level. Music crosses the language barriers and brings together various cultures under one roof, elevating moods and influencing behaviour. Music has always been a way to live in Africa, from the celebrations of life, to the mournings of death. Always one must dance and sing. And when it is a way of business the artists give it all to their fans.
