Posted on May 11, 2009 - Filed Under Travel

Over the last 10 years the arts scene in Singapore has grown enormously. This is due in large part to the enthusiasm and interest of local residents, though there has also been an increase in tourist attraction to festivals and local productions. There are over 5000 ticketed performances a year in the city and the number continues to increase. The National Arts Council is a major promoter and organizer of many festivals and events such as the leading arts festival in the region, Singapore Arts Festival. Tourists staying in the best hotels in Singapore often choose to visit the city to attend this major event. It is one of the local favorites and is increasingly becoming one of Singapore’s major tourist activities.

The Singapore Arts Festival is an annual event that usually occurs for about a month during the summer. It is the largest arts related event in Singapore and includes artists from around the world. Performers from more than 20 countries travel to participate in this event, and often their respective local audiences choose to travel to see them and other international performers. There is generally an audience of over 700,000 in attendance at this festival that includes over 500 performances and activities. Many original and experimental productions have their debut at the festival, which inspires the imagination and brings together global styles and perspectives.

It began 1977 as a celebration of local and regional artists and performances. Over the last three decades it has grown and expanded to include the international scene. It is responsible for placing Singapore at the center of the regions cultural expressions. The enormous interest and support that was given to it in its early years demonstrates Singapore’s love for the arts. The festival continues to grow and fosters continued enthusiasm, which creates a symbiotic connection between audience and art form. One of the most remarkable performances from the 2008 festival was presented by the French troupe ilotopie, called Water Fools. This two-day presentation took place entirely in the waters of the Singapore River.
