Hans Selye began his research on stress in 1956. At that time it was his conclusion that stress was not necessarily a bad thing. It just was dependent on one’s response. The stress of excitement, of creative pressure and striving for success is good, while the stress of humiliation or failure is extremely detrimental to ones overall health. He determined that experiences of stress could be negative or positive. Since then however, doctors have determined that no stress is good stress. One of the definitions that has becoming widely accepted with health professionals currently is that stress occurs when one feels overwhelmed with responsibilities. The chemical reactions in the body are the same, whether the situations are good or bad, and it is those chemical occurrences that cause damage.
