Proper Door Locks are Unattractive to Thieves

Posted on July 9, 2009 - Filed Under Security

A burglar will get into a house if they really, really want to…given that they can do it five minutes or less. The goal is to make ones house the least attractive on the block. For burglars of course. There are many ways one can go about doing this. One may have expensive alarm systems installed, or may even go to the extent of hiring a security company, but for effective and low cost ways to guard ones home, there is non other than the simple way of having proper window and door locks installed. Main doors are the easiest access to a burglar, especially if they are in any way sheltered from the view from the road. First step is to keep trees and bushes surrounding these doors trimmed and groomed, with nothing that would provide a hiding spot. Also, one must pay attention to the strength of the door and the frame. Many times, a good hard kick is all it takes for someone to gain access. The spring latched locks and cheap hinges just will not do. Locks and hinges should most always be upgraded with moving into a new home.

Dead bolts, dead bolts, dead bolts…law enforcement statistics state that these are the toughest to break through, and the simplest way one can go about protecting their home from thieves. For a common thief, about five minutes is all the time they will spend trying to work their way into a house before moving on to the next one. Dead bolts are a pain and take too long to break through. Many local home stores have locks that are easy to install should one have the proper power tools, and there are many qualified and reputable locksmiths that can install such a lock in no time for a reasonable price. The locks are the first part, the second is the screws that hold those locks and hinges. It may seem like a small aspect, but a few one inch screws will provide enough resistance to anyone trying to simply kick the door in. It’s all in the lock, the one thing on the main doors that will give a thief a moment to consider whether or not to just move on to the next, more easily accessible location, leaving ones home and belongings safe and secure.
