Famous Stratford Resident

Posted on August 19, 2009 - Filed Under Travel

William Shakespeare is beyond a doubt the most famous person to have ever been born in Stratford, England. This quiet little town on the River Avon, situated to the north of England, had no idea that in 1564 that baby that was born and baptized there would grow up to become one of the greatest writers of the English language to have ever existed. However, tourists staying in one of the quiet and comfortable Stratford hotels is most definitely going to be aware of this fact, and their choice of vacation is most likely related to visiting his childhood home.

Stratford, also known as Stratford on Avon has traditionally been a quiet little market town. Its residents were peaceful and generally had long roots in the area. While much of the charm of this town remains, and it is truly a beautiful experience to enjoy a night in one of its bed and breakfasts followed by morning tea in a beautiful garden, it simply cannot escape the fame, attention and interest it perpetually receives on account of its most famous resident. Shakespeare too grew up in a modest, though established and respected home.
At some point after Shakespeare’s marriage to Anne Hathaway and the birth of their first child, Shakespeare left town. It is not conclusively known where he was during those next few years and did not show up again until his arrival in London as an actor. There are theories that believe he exited for a time teaching school in a country location. Once Shakespeare started working in London, it was not long before he began writing what are often considered to be the greatest plays of the English language. Some of his most popular plays include the tragedies of Hamlet, Macbeth and King Lear as well as the comedies Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado About Nothing. Richard III is one of the most popular of his histories.
