New York’s MOMA

Posted on September 1, 2009 - Filed Under Travel

From my luxury hotels New York City it was a short walk to MOMA, The Museum of Modern Art or The Modern. A great collection of late 19th and 20th century art and design. Movement represented there include Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Impressionism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Minimalism, Expressionism and Post Modern to name a few. Works there range from the representational to abstract to re-purposed common items. There are impractical items such as a fur lined tea cup and saucer, design objects who’s origins were much earlier then their mass production like many plastic items in use today. The moulded plastic chair that defined modern design of the 1960s actually came into existence decades earlier. It is interesting to see the forward vision of the designers and how long it takes innovation and society tastes to catch up. Or see designs that never caught on objects that didn’t make it to mass production and marketing. The design galleries feature cooking utensils, dinner ware and ordinary house hold objects and their design transformation over the years. In addition to design there are films to be seen, drawings, paintings and sculpture. The sculpture garden features works by Miro, Picasso, Calder and more. A relaxing setting in NY the beauty of the garden and the sculptures combined. Inside are galleries of Cezanne, Redone, and Monet all playing with light and color capturing a fleeting moment in time. Or galleries of Dali, Ernst and Man Ray explore the subconscious mind with their surreal works of art. A study of these paintings gives in site to the influences of one painters work on anthers and one movement of painting as compared to another The Modern as New Yorkers call it is an overview of art post industrial revolution. It shows us works that challenged design, thinking, and ideas that had been static for centuries. Exploration of dreams, reuse of ordinary objects and strange juxtapositions are the wonders of The Modern.
