Lowell was a Great Industrious City

Posted on February 16, 2010 - Filed Under Travel

While we were visiting relatives in Boston, we decided to take an excursion to Lowell, which is right outside of Boston. My husband, being an industrialist wanted to explore the industrial side of Massachusetts. Before we left Boston, we went online to see if there might be a hotel we could book for the night. We happened upon this great hotel site, click here:, which gave us a nice listing of hotels in the area and their rates. We booked a room and it only took us minutes!

The first place my husband wanted to visit is the Boott Mills. The mill sits along the Merrimack River and is the oldest and fully restored manufacturing site in the area. Boott Mill has a walk-through museum that offers a living recreation of the textile manufacturing process back in the 19th century; my husband couldn’t have been more thrilled. The Tsongas Industrial History Center was adjacent to the mill and there we could actually weave and test out water wheels. It was really hands on and very interactive.

We then went on a walkway along the river and came across several un-restored mills, and some un-restored and restored sections of the canal raceway, which was used by the mills. There was a park, which has a center that focused on all the generations of immigrants. The park includes a 6 mile power canal system, so we saw that in the spring, boat give tours along the Pawtucket Canal.

It was time to find our hotel and check in for the night. But, before we did that, my husband managed to get some brochures about where to find Jack Kerouac’s grave site and about The Worthen House, where supposedly, Edgar Allan Poe wrote ‘The Raven’. We’ll be setting out tomorrow morning is search of these two sites.
