Palomas Crying in NYC

Posted on February 14, 2010 - Filed Under Travel

This city is a muse, this is the white goddess that Robert Graves wrote about, the one that captivates women and men from all walks of life.  It has the capacity to wake up a poetic urge in even the most straight-up rational minds, and brings the sentimentally-inclined to their knees, so they can worship at the font of desire.  New York has more songs about itself than any other place on earth, it would seem, and if there weren’t New York, it would be necessary to invent it.  Coming to the city to see what’s happening in the world right now is an event that’s always altering the order of things.  It’s a fantastic way to get in touch with the world’s cultures, and having a reservation at one of New York’s four-star hotels means that this trip will be taken in rare style.

Spending time in the city means getting to see all the latest entertainments, and trying to catch up on music, theatre, dance, and all the multiple media that artists play around in.  Of course, no one can catch up with anything here, but it’s the trying that’s essential, because the chase is what the muse lives for.  Paloma Faith might be one of the most recent singers to have a song called New York, and she’s certainly one of the most exciting, but she’s also written herself into a very esteemed lineage.

Like any muse, the city rewards those who sing about her, and to name her is to evoke something eternal and sacred.  Like any muse, she is extremely vain, and loves, loves, loves to hear her name.  New York is a place, a state of mind that breathes like a very tempermental goddess.  This might be one of the reasons why Paloma Faith’s burlesque works so well with New York audiences.  There is a long history to this, as well, and the style she’s working in has ancestors that have played on the same stages she’s playing on.  It’s a very heady combination, and the secret ingredient that’s tying it all together is a magnificent talent.
