A Meal to Remember in Singapore
Posted on March 28, 2010 - Filed Under Travel
I dined at Ming Kee Live last week in Singapore, and one thing I can say is I will always remember what I had to eat there. I mean do you even remember, vividly, what you ate two days ago? I think not. But, I sure do remember what I had a week ago! I think it was the best seafood cuisine I’ve ever had, or will ever have.
I only found out about Ming Kee Live when I was online in search of good food . Ming Kee Live was listed and I’ve heard some colleagues of mine rave about this eatery when they stayed in Singapore. So, I made reservations and off I went, but had a hard time finding the place. Ming Kee was easy to miss, it has a small building frontage, which is hidden by awnings covering their own al fresco area.
When I arrived, I was treated like royalty and I seemed to have gotten a prime seat. Nice. For starters, I ordered the fried eel skin served with a savoury and warm soy based dip. This appetiser was so crispy, light as air and it barely, barely had any grease. It was addictive to say the least, I wanted more, but if this appetiser is any indication of whats to come for my main course, I need to save lots of room.
For my main course, I ordered the Crab Beehoon, Ming Kee’s signature dish. I loved it! The vermicelli was flavourful, well braised and very soft, which is the way I like it. I became overwhelmed when I noticed that the noodles were coated with crab roe! What an excellent touch! The crab was huge and so very tasty, it’s really beyond description, it’s natural sweetness was gently coaxed out with the expertise of the chef.
I was pretty full, but I always have room for dessert. I ordered the Yam paste (orr nee) , which comes with ginkgo nuts and sweet potato. The yam’s were soft and smooth and not overly sweet. This was a perfect end to a perfect meal. I found the service to be professional and discreet, they anticipated all my needs and changed out dirty plates. So, my perfect dinner plus wine cost me only $54.00. Not a bad price to pay for a meal to always remember.
