Haunted New Orleans

Posted on March 31, 2010 - Filed Under Travel

Anyone who has spent a little time in the city of New Orleans would probably respond to the idea of hauntings here as if you were asking if the sky was high. Of course it’s haunted, it’s one of the most active places in the world for mysterious happenings. Or at least, there are more stories here than most anywhere else. Part of this comes, certainly, from the brutal legacies of slavery, where the centuries of tragedy come back in some shape or form. Telling ghost stories is often a way of making sense of the loss of loved ones, and there have been many events here that need reckoning.

It’s also a pretty spectacular place to visit, with plenty of excellent hotels to make your stay comfortable and quite cozy. Those who like to look at the spooky side of things will find a lot here, both for pure entertainment value, as well as for the fascinating history. The Haunted History Tours are a very popular favorite. There are many who recommend traveling in groups if you decide to look at the old cemeteries, and it may be to avoid trouble, or it may be to legitimately avoid becoming victim to a legitimate attack of the full-out willies.

There are some pretty stunning cemeteries, and lots of them, too. To visit all the cemeteries in New Orleans is a pretty tall order, as the list can certainly attest, but for serious students of the dark side, this is something that can be fairly eye opening. Visiting cemeteries can be a great way to feed that gothic impulse, but it should be remembered that these are sacred places more than anything. Observing protocol, and showing respect is necessary as one would when visiting anyone’s home. It’s possible to learn about the history of burials here, and why so many graves are above ground. It also reveals a wide array of rituals and traditions, which is fascinating in itself, and also gives a picture of the multiple spiritual traditions practiced over time in the city. They also give a larger picture of the lives that were lived here, and makes for some poignant and profound lessons in history.
