The Band in Atlantic City

There’s groups that define a moment, and the Band is one of those. It’s one of the rare greats that actually seems to be moving the culture forward at its peak, and in hindsight seems even more important than they did then. It’s an amazing thing, then, to see the Band getting attention lately, with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, winning the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and making the Rolling Stone list for the top 100 bands of all time. These aren’t small players, and they never were.
It’s an even greater pleasure to hear cultural giants when they appear at geographically significant places. Hearing Glen Campbell’s “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” in Phoenix is a very different thing that when it’s heard in Toronto. Likewise, it’s amazing to hear the Band’s version of Altantic City when it’s played here. With the fabulous boardwalk and the amazing hotels so close by, it adds some very rich textures to the experience, and even makes the time here even more valuable.
Their versions of songs have always been heartfelt, and often move deep into the realm of excellence, and that cover is one that can demonstrate what the Band is famous for. They take a musical phrase, and turn it upside down and backwards, but you usually don’t notice that this is what they’re doing until it’s far into the groove, and the change is happening to the music while you’re starting to move in a different way. It’s an uncanny kind of thing, and it’s a part of the reason why they’re considered pioneers of psychedelia. It’s also amazing to see that they can still do it, pulling it off every time, and making new audiences go through a heavy and transformative experience.
