Choosing The Right Exterior Shutters

Posted on July 15, 2010 - Filed Under Home & Garden

There are many options when it comes to choosing the right exterior shutters that will contribute to the beauty of your home, but it’s not an easy decision, not only because there are hundreds of styles, types and models to choose from, but because these exterior shutters will be on your house for years to come and will have a significant impact on how your home will look.

Selecting the style should be your first consideration; each type has its own tradition and history such as the Louvered exterior shutter: this is the traditional, classic style that can have the broadest of applications. Louvered blends in well with most modern homes. Many builders and interior designers use the louver style because the home owner has control of the amount of sunlight that will enter into the home.

The Raised Panel style has the distinction of an authentic colonial look. There’s really no substitution for the elegant beauty of a solid exterior shutters with designed wood panels that are inserted in the frame.

Flat panels give the look of a raised panel exterior shutter and are less expensive, but don’t have the quality of beauty as the authentic raised panel shutters. Board-n-Batten exterior shutters create a look of the ‘Town and Country’ home or the coastal New England or rustic simple design. With the Board-n-Batten you can create many different looks with the heavy planks secured by slats that can be horizontal or diagonal.

You can always create a combination of the louver and the raised panel or board-n-batten, which the top pane can be the louvered and the bottom is the solid section. As you can see, it’s a tough decision.
