The World as a Virtual Lab

Posted on August 26, 2010 - Filed Under Technology

Today’s working environments can skirt between making a living and having a life, and often crosses the borders between the two. At times, this can be in rather uncomfortable ways, where more and more people are expected to take their work home with them. At the same time, there are also certain freedoms that are offered by integrating more tasks to an on-line platform, so that the official working day is based on a much looser structure. In these situations, taking work home can be rather liberating, because it means that there are more opportunities to do things during the day. It’s a question of integrating work and life .

It’s a new way of doing things, certainly, and the world has entered into a new series of structures and challenges. It is as if the culture were entering into a new virtual lab , where there are explorations of ways to make work meaningful, and also take advantage of the new technologies that can give more flexibility to labor. Online platforms where tasks and ideas can flow freely are but one step toward making new mental constructs that inform how lives are to be organized. It is a laboratory, and the fascinating part of it is that every participant also gets to play the role of scientist.
