Car Dealerships Folding; Las Vegas No Exception

With the economy continuing its downward spiral, Nevada car dealerships are suffering in a big way. Integrity Chrysler Jeep Dodge announced today that the dealership will close May 29 after being “buffeted by both dramatic decreases in sales and difficulties in the credit markets.” Integrity’s closure comes a day after an anonymous source said in an Associated Press story that Chrysler is planning to eliminate 800 of its 3,200 dealers on Thursday.

Integrity General Manager Dave Wick said the decision to close the dealership was made locally and was unrelated to any reported plans by Chrysler. Chrysler, which has received $4 billion in government loans, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York on April 30.

Wick said customers who have purchased cars at the dealership, which boasts that it is the largest Chrysler dealer on the West Coast, can go to other dealers for service.

Auto dealerships nationwide continue to suffer massive losses, some turning to inventive new “financing” programs, including those by Kia and Saturn which include “picking up” car payments of delinquent loan holders.

Northwest Florida Leadership institute slipped into state budget

Not all leadership institutes and programs are legitimate. It is a good idea to research any program before going into. Here is an interesting story out of Florida about how a leadership institute has become political.

Kelli Hernandez of the Northwest Florida Daily News discovered that the Northwest Florida Leadership Institute was all about politics.

According to the proposal for the school, it was needed because the need for leadership development had become more pressing.

The reporter found that Florida State Rep. Ray Sansom ended up inserting more than $8 million into the state budget for a school that nobody in the local business community asked for or needed.

This institute was never even discussed with the Senate Education Committee Chairman Don Gaetz, despite the fact it is being built in Gaetz’s home town of Gainesville, Florida.

According to the article Gaetz said he did not understand why the institute was needed in the first place since leadership training had always been done due to the need to pursue leadership skills.

The college will remain under scrutiny until it is built and opened. So far the college will see no further funding from the state and there are talks to have it taken out of the budget entirely. This of course is just one example of how a potential place for education can be used at political oil to start a fire in the state of Florida. There are many programs and ways to gain expertise in the leadership development and ways to obtain leadership training. In this economy, wasteful spending even for something like this institute can’t be tolerated.
