Amendments to the U.S. Patriot Act

One of the sections of the U.S. Patriot Act is specifically designed and written in regards to the amount of funding provided to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and their technical support systems. This means literally that more money will be allotted to the government surveillance program with regards to electronic monitoring. Over the coming three years, two billion dollars will be distributed to the FBI to expand and improve upon their methods of surveillance.

The FBI’s center of technical support as been the government’s principal means and source of initiatives regarding surveillance and could serve to speed up further funding of such proposals. This Act allows expands upon and broadens the terms for the use of and the authority granted to the Internet service providers in terms of the interceptions of electronic, oral, or wire communications when subjects are suspected of abuse charges or cases of fraud and corruption.

What this basically does is to expand the service providers ability to ask for government assistance when they feel that activities of computer hacking are taking place, or when the call on the subjects with questions and the subjects deny the hacking. This is an amendment to the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and adds to the Act the methods for obtaining such surveillance techniques as wire taps in order to facilitate the investigations into the offenses of hacking and allows further involvement of the governments and their resources.

This also grants the companies to share the information they have gained through their own investigations that have used the wire taps, with a broader range of officials and government offices. The information is legally allowed to be used in grand jury cases and proceedings as well as with a variety of federal enforcement agencies including the protective agencies, the immigration and intelligence agencies as well as with the personnel of the defence and security agencies. This expansion of the laws is and attempt to put and end to the corruption and abuse that takes place on in the Internet today.

Corruption is not only an overt act or practice, but it occurs when one simply does not offer the truth. Keeps the truth hidden. Many people in the world are demanding that the gap between a politician’s public life and their private life and accumulated assets and financial holdings be lessened. The entire legal system is in question, when a politician will avoid legal issues while ensuring that their wealth accumulated through corrupt practices is kept safely off of the shores of their country, in a foreign financial institute. This is currently an issue in Africa, as well as many countries throughout the world. The fact that Africa is riddled with corruption in the political realm, is known throughout the world.

What is questioned ethically and morally, is that when the government of a country has such a difficult time providing the basic needs of the people of their country, as far as enough food for the people to eat and safe water to drink, electricity, plumbing and proper housing…when the officials of such a country can not provide these basic needs, how is it acceptable that there is more that four hundred billion dollars in the Swiss bank accounts of many of Africa’s heads of state. This is a problem that is difficult to tackle and resolve because many are not acknowledging it, and is one of the most dire problems in the country today, and not much has been done, or is being done currently to rectify the situation.

The growth in the economic sector has been on the rise, and much of that growth is owed to foreign investments. However, even as the economy of the country is on the rise, the poverty levels remain the same. Much is reported in the news about the mass starvation and the issues of extreme poverty in Africa, but for some reason the fact that corruption runs rampant throughout the country is never discussed and never considered to associated with the state of the society. This is one of the elements in the simple definition of corruption, that when the officials of a company are involved in corruption, the entire society suffers.

Companies can save themselves worry and headache concerning the policies of regulatory compliance simply by sufficient preparation and planning. When companies are attempting to organize their practices it is best to look at the entire set of practices at once, instead of the temptation to look at aspects one at a time and without regards to how all aspects affect the whole.

It is best to have one individual, or one group that has the sole responsibility of organizing and conducting risk management tests, rather that to have the managers of each department responsible. In this way, it remains to be a consistent activity, with consistent rules and governing regulations. Compliance is not something that is successful when the single elements are tackled. Larger companies may even appoint one officer in charge of the over-seeing of the compliance. This also ensures that any involvement without agencies does create inadvertent breaches in the privacy or security of information.

The Dangers of DUI

Driving under the influence (DUI) is a leading killer in the United States today. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 12,998 people died from alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2007.

According to NHTSA data, 437 people died in Nevada in 2007 in alcohol-impaired crashes. In Las Vegas this month, UNLV student Lindsay Bennett was killed by a drunk driver. Each year Las Vegas lawyers deal with hundreds of license suspension and DUI cases. Nevada has established strict laws to help combat the prevalence of drunk driving; however, the Las Vegas strip is an alcohol haven and many people simply don’t get a cab or find a sober friend to drive for them.

Arizona also has a high number of alcohol-impaired crashes with 1,066 fatalities reported in 2007. In that same year, over 7,000 people were arrested for DUI. In 2008, over 6,000 people were arrested for DUI in Arizona. Phoenix lawyers certainly have their hands full, and convicting someone for driving under the influence may become even harder as blood alcohol content testing devices are under scrutiny.

Almost one year ago, a diver off the coast of the island of Mallorca, spotted a monk seal. What is amazing about this, is that the species was thought to be extinct in the Mediterranean. The monk seal is on the top ten most endangered species of the world. Mallorca is a very popular destination for travelers coming from all over the world to experience the beauty and tranquility of the island, and to have fun in the sun. Jet skis, and power boats fill the waters surrounding the island. Government officials considered a program that would increase and in insure the existence of the seal, however the traffic created by these water sports may provide too much for such a program to be successful. Species entering extinction is just one of the environmental concerns of the the Island and the county of Spain as a whole. In response, Spain has become a world leader, not only in population growth and the economy of tourism in such areas as resorts, spas and 5 star Mallorca hotels, but also in the technology and practice of the use of alternative energy.

The government of Spain has subsidized the building and the operation of energy generating wind plants for just about ten years. The power generated by the wind mills in Spain has just one rival, the country of Germany. The wind plants actually provide a profit every year, and because of this, and the advancing technology allowing the plants to run more efficiently, the government has decided to cut the funding. However the results of such plants and the fact that they actually make money, insures that more plants will continue to be built in the future. At a conference a few months ago, while it was announced that this funding would be cut, the funds available for soar power research and development will increase by more than half.

The capital city, La Palma, of Mallorca became the first city to install energy saving bulbs in their traffic lights. This started ten years ago and to this date, the city is the first to have all the traffic lights so powered. One result this has is that there will now be just about 2,000 less tons of carbon dioxide released back into the environment. And since the lights burn brighter at night, the added beneficial effect has been a reduction in the number of traffic accidents. La Palma has become an example for the rest of the world in that they are a growing community, a very busy tourist destination and they’ve discovered how to operate in a more green way, and made a profit doing just that.
