World’s Largest Basketball in Knoxville

The United States is replete with items that are the largest in the world — i.e., the world’s largest frying pan in Long Beach, Washington; the world’s largest ball of twine, just outside Cawker City, Kansas. In Knoxville, Tennessee, you’ll find the world’s largest basketball. It weighs ten tons and is perched atop a glass staircase that looks like an immense basketball net at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, which was founded a decade ago, in 1999. Inside, you’ll find as a centerpiece a 17 foot-bronze statue by Elizabeth McQueen, a California artists, intended to convey to visitors the hall’s goal to “honor the past, celebrate the present, and promote the future.” You’ll be able to see a variety of multimedia presentations and many artifacts of basketball — photographs, medals, scrapbooks, even old uniforms — all intended to capture the history of women’s basketball.

Andre Agassi is well known in the tennis world, and though he will not be the soon to be held Australian Tennis Open, he is still a fixture and figure of tennis. Besides he’s already won the Australian Open in previous years. He has been known for his natural talent which he has honed throughout the years with help from coaches and mentors of all kinds. Famously, he attend the Tennis Academy in Florida run by Nick Bollettietri. He was originally only supposed to go for a few weeks as that was all his family could afford for him. However, when Bollettietri saw him play, he said the family could take the money back and Andre could play for free.

Though his fluffy eighties hair turned out to be a wig and his perfect reputation marred by an admitted use of methamphetamine, his talent and life on the court is nothing short of perfection and completely authentic. Mats Wilander has in fact named him the top tennis player of all time, at least as far as men’s tennis goes.

What exactly is about Agassi that makes him such a success? He knows how to anticipate his opponent’s moves which is extremely difficult. You can know a person’s style from reading up about them and what others say in the media, but when on the court, it is an altogether different matter. Though his serve and volley are not his strong points, he does a great return on serves and extremely well on his baseline game. He also manages to always steal the ball always from competitors initially in the game. Making people run about the court trying to keep up with the ball has always made him famous and provided him with a tennis name—the punisher.

However, in real life, he anything but, providing much money and time and effort in charity work to help children pursue their dreams in athletics. In fact, he opened a charter school for children from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds in the LA area in 2001, calling it the Andre Agassi College Prepatory Academy. With his generous personality and great talent, it has made him one of the greatest players tennis has ever had.

Pittsburgh Steelers One of the Oldest Sports Teams

The Pittsburgh Steelers won the 2008 Super Bowl against the Arizona Cardinals. Since they were initially founded in 1933 they have been something of a fan based controversial team and are either loved or hated by most football enthusiasts. However, this has not stopped them from winning the most Super Bowl titles than any other AFC or NFC team. They have six titles under their belt and it doesn’t look like they plan to slow down or change gears any time soon. Sports tickets to their games are always in demand and season subscription rates are high.

They were initially known as the Pittsburgh Pirates, which was the title they were given by founder Art Rooney. Ownership of the team remains in the Rooney family to this day, and they are the fifth oldest football franchise in the NFL. They have a strong, loyal and passionate fan base, which has been given the nickname Steeler Nation. They used to play their home games in the Three Rivers Stadium, which housed them for 31 seasons. In 2001 the new stadium Heinz Field was built and is now the location where they host their home games. The transition was received with a mixed response by the fans and community who had formed an attachment to Three Rivers, which they strongly associated with their team.

The Steelers have gone through many different areas and various glory periods. They have produced some of the top stars in the field, and they players are all local celebrities. Mean Joe Greene, Franco Harris and Lynn Swann are only three of the numerous Hall of Famers the team has had. The Kranji Race Track, Singapore

The Kranji Race Track is an amazing establishment, one that regularly picks the guests of the Singapore hotels up in cars, drives them to the tracks and them will bring them back at night. The only requirement is that two or more people are along for the ride. The track is on just about one hundred acres of land and contains not only the stables, but a veterinary clinic and a training center, state of the art, not to mention. The center is equipped, for the horses, with tread mills, track of both sand and surf, and a swimming pool. Again, the pool is for the horses! There are three tracks at Kranji , each varying in length. The tracks were so designed as to even take into account the drainage systems as the monsoon season is Singapore is quite dramatic, much like that in the Southwestern United state of Arizona. For even after the most severe downpour, the tracks are ready for the races in not time at all. International veterans of the sport, are filled with admiration and respect for this set of tracks in Singapore.

There is perhaps a misconception about the tracks. This is a glamorous location, proper dress is required and the lights and spectacles may give the impression that it is all about that glamour. However, the horses at the site of Kranji Race Track are cared for with diligence, love and respect. Aside from the swimming pool, the stables are filled with features that are downright extraordinary. The weather in Singapore can be muggy. More often times, it is more than muggy, with the sub-tropical environment being one that is extremely hot and humid. Horses that are not accustomed to these conditions are provided with air conditioned, climate monitored stalls. Pine shavings in the stalls provides relief from dust, and the stalls themselves are quite large. The welfare of the animals and the safety of the jockeys is of great concern. It cost the country one billion dollars to build the tracks in 1999, and throughout the history, racing has been supported attended, and organized with the fervor of those enamored with sport, as well as those that are managing the venues.

IPL Final To Be Held in Johannesburg

The new schedule for IPL will see the final match held at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, South Africa on May 24, 2009. Johannesburg will also host semi-final play, with the other semi-final being held in Pretoria.

The IPL, which was moved from India due to security concerns, will kick off on April 18th in Cape Town’s Newlands Stadium. A total of 59 matches will be held in eight cities across South Africa, including Port Elizabeth, Durban, Kimberly, East London, and Bloemfontein.

The tournament is expected to generate business for restaurants, bars, and hotels across the country. Look for the opening and closing matches will generate the most interest with hotels Johannesburg and Cape Town getting a lot of attention. Durban’s Kingsmead stadium will host 18 matches while Pretoria’s Centurion Park will host 16, bringing a lot of athletes and fans to those cities as well.

The opening double header in Cape Town will feature defending champs Rajasthan Royals against the Bangalore Royal Challengers followed by the Mumbai Indians against the Chennai Super Kings. In all, there will be ten double headers during the IPL.

Upcoming Dance Festivals of Singapore

Singapore has a long standing history of annual festivals. Be it the WOMAD and the Mosaic music festivals, Shakespeare in the Park Festivals, the Wayang Opera street performances these festivals draw crowds from with in the city and from all over the world. Three such festivals are occurring during the year, the Zoukout Dance Music Festival, the Sinpapore Ballroom Dance Festival and the National DanceSport Competition. These festivals offer performances, workshops and so much more. And during the years have become some of the most interesting and exciting festivals of the island.

The ZoukOut is a one day festival in December and has become the most attended and the largest dance and music festival in all of Asia. This is a 24 hour festival beginning the moment the sun comes up, and does not end until sunrise the following day. Held at the Zouk nightclub on the island of Sentosa, the music and dancing goes on all night, most of it occurring outside on the beach. Sentosa, just off the southern coast of Singapore is a resort island five star Singapore hotels and golf courses, and hosts a variety of other festivals and activities as well. And over the years the festival has grown to include more than music and dance, as open air markets, massage tents, food vendors and artists have set up on the fringe. This is an all out celebration of the arts. The DanceSport festival is Singapore’s version of “So You Think You Can Dance” This is more a competition than a festival but it is widely attended. Singapore has a long standing and growing love affair with the form of Ballroom Dance. And while there is artistic expression and very glamorous costumes and attitudes, it is all about winning the competition. Each year in August, another Ballroom dance festival is sponsored by the Raffles hotel. There is competition involved in this festival as well, but not so fierce as the DanceSport. Competitors from all over South East Asia make the trip to compete for the chance to be one of six couples that perform at the finale, known as the World Superstar Ballroom Extravaganza. This is a relatively young festival, 2009 marks just its second year. Part of the festivities include dance classes and workshops for the public to enjoy and become part of the action.
