The Grand Canyon is one of the biggest tourist destinations in Arizona, if not the entire Southwest. Each year thousands of visitors come to marvel at its magnificent size and depth. However, many visitors don’t just come to look at the Canyon, they come to experience it.

Hiking the Grand Canyon is an experience unlike any other. Standing on the canyon floor with mile high rock walls surrounding you on both sides will leave you utterly speechless.

There are a couple ways to hike the Canyon. The most common, of course, is by foot. However, if walking isn’t your thing there are mules that can take you in or Grand Canyon helicopter tours that can take you downto some parts.

One of the reasons the Grand Canyon is such a popular hiking destination is that hikers of all skill levels can experience it. For beginning hikers or those just looking for a quick weekend trip, hiking from the North or South Rim to Phantom Ranch is a good trail choice. More avid hikers enjoy going from rim to rim, while extreme hikers do rim to rim to rim.

As great as the Grand Canyon is to visit, deciding to hike down inside the Canyon will give you a whole new perspective as well as a new set of experiences.

For lovers of architecture, Los Angeles provides at least two examples of famed designer Frank Lloyd Wright. The first project he created in L.A. was the Hollyhock House . Constructed from 1919 to 1921, this building serves as one of Wright’s earliest efforts to create a style of architecture appropriate to the region of Southern California. The residence combines a house with gardens connected by equal interior and exterior spaces, glass doors, a perch, and colonnades. Rooftop terraces allow visitors a view of the Los Angeles basin and the Hollywood Hills.

A second residence is perhaps even more widely known because it’s been repeatedly featured in film and television, including “Blade Runner,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “The Karate Kid, Part III.” This is the Ennis House , thought to be one of the more intriguing residential structures in the United States. Built in 1924, the home may be found in the LA neighborhood of Los Feliz, just to the south of Griffith Park. It was originally designed for Charles and Mabel Ennis and is the fourth and biggest of Wright’s textile block designs, connecting precast, interlocking concrete blocks. Both buildings reflect a Mayan temple influence, a style of Wright’s that’s sometimes referred to as Mayan Revival architecture.

At the Hollyhock House, architect enthusiasts may take a tour Wednesdays through Sundays each hour from 12:30 to 3:30, but at the Ennis House, it’s possible to buy the home. It’s recently been put on the market; if the home has been purchased before you have a chance to arrive in the city, then it’s always possible to still have a great stay in top Los Angeles hotels and take a drive past the famous structure.

Many people make the trip to Vancouver to attend festivals, conduct business, or enjoy some of the city’s wonderful outdoor attractions or museums and galleries. Visitors to hotels in Vancouver should also make time to appreciate the city’s unique architectural contributions. Starting with the old downtown area, there are a group of Edwardian buildings that, in their heydey, were the tallest commercial buildings in the British Empire, including the Dominion Building, the Carter-Cotton Building, and the Sun Tower. The city is home to other notable buildings from that era, including the Vancouver Art Gallery Building, which was designed by Francis Rattenbury. Another architectural must-see is Christ Church Cathedral .

Those who favor Art Deco design will want to check out the Marine Building , built in the 1920s and inspired by the Crysler Building in New York, the Marine Building is popular with filmmakers due to its brass-gilt elevators and doors and elaborate ceramic tile facings. Other structures of interest range from the MacMillian-Bloedel Building known as the concrete waffle, the Hotel Vancouver, and Canada Place. More modern architecture can be seen in the Vancouver Library Square — modeled after the Rome Colosseum, the Vancouver Law Courts, the Harbour Centre as well as City Hall and the Vancouver Hospital’s Centennial Pavilion.

Students considering a trip to New York City will find the City to not be as expensive as they might think. New York City with its hundreds of thousands of college students who attend the more than 300 local schools and universities including Columbia, Hofstra, New York University and Hunter College, is a student-friendly city. There are many attractions, New York City hotels and events that offer a student discount. All that’s necessary is a valid student ID card from any of the New York colleges and universities, or by obtaining a discount card from the International Student Travel Confederation

Students can save a bundle during a trip to New York City with Broadway Tickets, museum entry fees and other cultural events. Broadway tickets can cost hundreds of dollars, but there are generous student discounts available. However, the seats are usually located the furthest away from the stage or the seats have an obstruction, like a column. Most New York City museums offer student discounts, usually the prices are good for any day. Some museums, like the Metropolitan Museum of Art offers free admission to students from local schools.

Other cultural attractions like the opera or ballet offer student’s discounts or student rush tickets. Rush tickets are tickets purchased by cash during certain hours for that days performance. Here’s a sampling of organizations where student rush tickets are available: Brooklyn Academy of Music; Carnegie Hall ; New York City Ballet; and the New York City Opera.

Those who are looking for the best of everything in a state as big as Florida will need to book some extra time. There are way too many cities, and every one of these is eclectic and exciting in its own way. It would be worth the time to spend a week in every neighborhood in Miami, or the same amount devoted to each beach, but time is usually to short. Those who come to enjoy the five star Florida hotels usually want fast recommendations, and the good news is, visitors are in good hands.

There’s something for everyone, and the concierge can usually make a great starter recommendation, and the locals one might meet can take it from there. For pizza, there’s plenty of choice. In Southern Florida, Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza gets lots of raves, and there’s plenty of locations to taste it. Amici’s in Coconut Creek also does it New York style, and they specialize in serving the neighborhood and community with a friendly atmosphere. A nod has to go out to Chicago-style pizza, and the thin crust version of it is superb at Pusateri’s in Stuart. Devoted Chicago natives have given it great notices, and that’s always saying something.

As with all other major cities and towns in the United States, there are some buildings and sites located in Minneapolis that have reached various hauntings listings. There is a certain fascination that many people have with possible hauntings and it really doesn’t matter whether or not it’s true the idea alone is thrilling and entices people from all walks of life. And while the friendly staff at some of the Minneapolis boutique hotels are unlikely to suggest haunted locations as top tourist attractions, they certainly entice many visitors and residents alike. Meanwhile some of the top tourist attractions also have a reputation for being some of those that are haunted.

The old Guthrie Theatre is one of those. And with most theatre’s worth their curtains, they come complete with the theatre ghost. Of course that’s based on legend, isn’t it? There were stories about a former usher haunting the place, though in 2007 the theatre moved into a new building and has seemingly left the former employee behind. Another popular haunting is with the First Avenue nightclub . It has been reported that frequent sightings of a blonde haired woman wearing a green jacket occur hanging in one of the restrooms. Strange encounters with lights and odd sightings on the dance floor are also reported to occur. The City Hall and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design are a couple of the other reportedly haunted locations in the city.

The photography studio is a kind of sacred space in the art world. It’s not only the glitz and glamour spot where beautiful people in swimwear get photographed for corporate advertising shoots, but much more than that. That is the bread and butter of the spaces, surely, but the appeal to the local community becomes apparent whenever there are art gatherings. Las Vegas does have its share of photography studios, as one might imagine from the kinds of high rollers that pass through the city. One of these that fits the bill and stands apart is R2K Studio .

The space is impressive, and can even make jaws drop from those who are used to the kinds of gorgeous spaces at the Las Vegas hotels . It’s a large warehouse, with an open plan that feels airy but also interesting. The sense of design is nothing less than crisp, and it always seems lively, no matter what’s happening , but on gallery nights, it’s especially appealing.

These are the famous first Friday events, where the local galleries in the downtown arts district open their doors in the early evening, so that the locals can see art for free, and rub elbows with each other. It’s also a very fun evening out for guests, with a break from the casinos in order to see what the cool kids in town like to do on weekends. There are plenty of surprises in store.

There are a lot of unusual creatures in Florida. There are the ones who haunt the clubs on weekends, and then the ones that live in the swamps. In a place that’s so immersed in the waters that surround it, there are other mythical creatures that have gotten people’s attention for thousands of years. Sea monsters and mermaids appear all over the world, in folklore and literature, and in popular films. They also live in Florida, about an hour north of Tampa, in a delightful attraction called Weeki Wachee Springs State Park .

In 1946, a former Navy Seal named Newton Perry was wandering around these springs, and had some ideas. The springs have been here for thousands of years, and go so deep into the earth that divers haven’t been able to touch bottom. The currents twenty feet below the surface are about 5 miles an hour, which is considerable for shallow water, but further than that it starts to get pretty treacherous. While thinking of ways to train military personnel, he conceived of an idea where rubber tubing pumping oxygen could be sent down to shallow levels. Divers at this level could breath fresh air from the tubes, and stay down for indefinite periods.

He also thought about how everyone loves mermaids, and if performers trained to swim could do work at these lower depths, there might be something lucrative in all this. It turned out to be a very good idea, and it took off like fire on the water. Weeki Wachee became a roadside attraction, drawing people come to enjoy the best resorts Florida has to offer. In the old days, families would drive up to the attraction. The women performing as mermaids would lounge outside the spring, and hearing their cars, take their cue and dive under to get ready for another show. It’s more sophisticated technology that guides the shows these days. The mermaids have codified their training, and even have special showcases to honor the mermaids of the last generation.

For now, they perform tales like The Little Mermaid for the entertainment value, but there’s not a small amount of myth and mystery going on with the shows. The park was actually in danger of closing recently, but a couple of years ago it was indoctrinated as a Florida state park , and it looks like the mermaids will be around for a long time still.

We have all seen the stars that don’t go anywhere without their furry companions whether they happen to fit in a hand bag or could be classified as a small horse. Everyone wishes they could bring their pets with them on vacation. They’re often better behaved than the kids why should they be stuck in a kennel for a week? Thankfully this niche has been answered eagerly by boutiques, restaurants, and hotels all over Los Angeles.

When you start looking for a hotel and plan to bring your pet look closely at any special requirements the hotel sets on its “pet friendly” policy. Obviously, if you are planning a week of fun in the sun with your Great Dane you do not want to accidentally book a room at a hotel that insists on a 40 lbs. weight limit on your pet. Also, call around and don’t be afraid to ask if the concierge knows of a hotel that might accept you and your furry friend. Some hotels offer special services just for your pet, personal bed, special treats, even sometimes going as far as to treat your pet as well as a human guest would expect to be treated.

There are many spots to spend quality time with your dog, at Lake Hollywood there is a dog park below the Hollywood Sign. You’ll love the photo opp of getting to see your pooch posing under the sign. Afterward, why not head over to the Hollywood Walk of Fame to admire the paw prints of Lassie’s or Rin Tin Tin . There are a variety of dag parks available many leash-free or offering a specialized amenity for your pet. Laurel Canyon Dog Park has a pool specifically for the dogs and has special hours dedicated to being leash optional.

If you can’t find a hotel to accept your companion or you want to venture off for a day of your own you can make arrangements with the Kennel Club LAX. A resort-type “kennel” for dogs, here your dog or cat can have a suite to itself; complete with lounge bed and TV/VCR. If you want your cat or dog treated like royalty the stay can include pet massage and yappy hour, not to mention pedicures and toe polish. Luckily, many five star hotels Los Angeles offers are more than willing to help accommodate you though you’ll likely have to make a special deposit or pay a cleaning fee.
